Country style apple honey spare ribs

It’s that time of year when the air is crisp and the apples are sweet and fresh picked. These spare ribs are slightly sweet and a wee bit spicy because of the apple juice, honey and BBQ flavors. The secret to making these country-style spare ribs is the marinade and roasting them low and slow so they turn out nice and tender. If you like your ribs a little on the spicy side, then use a spicier BBQ sauce or add a little more cayenne pepper to your taste. We prefer a sweeter and mellow flavor with just a hint of spice, so I like to use Sweet Baby Ray’s Original BBQ sauce and just a dash of cayenne in this recipe.

Serve with fresh slices of apples. The sweetness and crunch of the apples pairs nicely with the BBQ sauce.

  1. 3 lbs country style cut pork spare ribs

  2. 4 tbsp apple juice

  3. 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  4. 1 tbsp honey

  5. 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil

  6. 1/4 tsp onion powder

  7. 1/4 tsp paprika

  8. 1/4 tsp cumin

  9. 1 clove garlic (crushed)

  10. 1/2 tsp dried thyme

  11. 1/4 tsp sea salt

  12. 1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper

  13. 1 dash cayenne pepper (optional)

  14. 1/4 cup BBQ sauce (use your favorite)

  15. apple (cut into slices for garnish)

  16. Combine all ingredients except the BBQ sauce and apple slices in a large bowl. Coat the pork thoroughly. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 4 hours. During that time, stir the mixture occasionally distributing the marinade over the pork.

  17. Preheat the oven to 300 F. Cover a shallow baking pan or roasting pan with aluminum foil. Place the ribs in a single layer and bake for 2 hours. The ribs should be tender. Drain excess grease and liquid. Brush BBQ sauce on the ribs and return to the oven for another 30 minutes. Serve on a platter garnished with fresh apple slices.

I suggest Sweet Baby Ray’s Original BBQ sauce for this recipe
